Preparing for the New Year 2020

It’s December 30th and New Year 2020 is fast approaching, everyone is in hyper mode going panic buying. Whew…

We went to Colonnade Supermarket in Centro Mandaue City Cebu to get a cheaper price of their fruits and other groceries in preparation for the new year. I knew that the supermarket is a bit crowded most of the time but I never expect it to be crowded with three times the usual number of people.

We took a re-route to the public market across it instead to buy 12 types of round fruits — you know for the famous yearly tradition we have while welcoming the New year. We spent exactly 375 pesos on the fruits: Pineapple, apple, orange, mango, guava, melon, grapes, java rose apple (known as tambis), pomelo, chico, star apple (caimito), and pears. Not bad — but I expect a lot cheaper than that! – haha – Well anyways, we can’t expect it to go lower considering the holiday season. I mean its demand is increasing. You know how holidays can stimulate the economy :D. Forgot to mention the different bidding and bargaining we had to undergo behind the scenes to obtain those fruits at 375 pesos haha. Don’t mind me, I’m just exaggerating 😛

Well anyway, here is a sneak peek of the fruits we bought earlier.

What is the significance of preparing 12 round fruits before New year?

We have believed that the 12 fruits symbolize the 12 months of the new year and the round shape symbolizes coin or money. This practice is believed to attract good luck and good fortune. We Filipinos observe this practice in the hope of abundance and prosperity. This has been our tradition for many generations now since our grandmother’s time or even long before them.

Sorry, just got the chance now to continue this article…..
It’s January 1st, 2020 now – yay! This is the first time my husband and I celebrated New Year on our own – just the two of us. We’ve prepared pasta, mango float, and wine other than the fruits.
